We all know Maine makes a great setting for ultra-spooky, suspenseful stories (thanks Stephen King!). However, the state is also an ideal spot for lighter mystery books. Small towns with Main Streets, scenic locations with plenty of hiding spots, old homes, and tourists coming and going add up to the perfect formula for cozy mystery book series. If you like your murder mysteries without a lot of terror, and perhaps with a cat and a cup of tea, here are some series set in Maine to check out.

1) Maine Clambake Mysteries, Barbara Ross

Set in fictional Busman’s Harbor, the Maine Clambake Mystery series centers on Julia Snowden. She recently moved back to the town and is now running her family’s clambake business - and of course, solving a few murders on the side.

2) Home Repair is Homicide, Sarah Graves

Jacobia Tiptree has moved from New York City to Eastport, Maine, and is fixing up an old home in the coastal town. While dealing with the challenges of restoring the property, she also faces the challenge of regularly becoming involved in solving local murders.

3) Lucy Stone Mysteries, Leslie Meier

Celebrate holidays and milestones throughout the year in fictional Tinker’s Cove, Maine with reporter Lucy Stone. The events are never without a crime, though, and Lucy is on the case.

4) Second Chance Cat Mysteries, Sofie Ryan

Sarah and her cat Elvis handle running a shop full of used and refurbished goods while also cracking cases in coastal (and fictional) North Harbor, Maine. The shop, like the series, is named Second Chance.

5) Mainely Needlepoint, Lea Wait

The Mainely Needlepoint series features a main character, Angie, whose life has been impacted by mystery since her mother disappeared during her childhood. Angie returns home to Maine in the first book of the series and deals with this mystery while joining up with an old friend and the Mainely Needlepointers. The series continues with Angie and her friends solving other mysteries in fictional Harbor Haven.

6) Sunny & Shadow Mysteries, Claire Donally

A move from New York City to Kittery Harbor, ME puts Sunny Coolidge in the middle of small town life and small town mysteries. A stray cat soon becomes attached to Sunny and the two investigate around town as murders happen throughout the series.
