In 2020, The Maine Mag published a list of essential Maine reads. Looking through it, I was surprised - and a bit embarrassed - to find I’d only read seven of them. Two of the seven were assigned reading in school that I only vaguely remember. Below are the seven books from the list that I’ve read. To find the entire list of what The Maine Mag deems to be essential Maine books, visit their website here.

1) Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

This Pulitzer Prize winner is a must-read, and one I’m considering re-reading myself.

2) The Cider House Rules by John Irving

Even if you’ve already seen the 1999 movie, the book is worth the read.

3) Bag of Bones by Stephen King

A spooky lakeside story set in western Maine, Bag of Bones is a great read, but not one I’d suggest bringing upta camp.

4) The Maine Woods by Henry David Thoreau

Travel along with Thoreau as he visits the wilderness of Maine and reflects on his experiences.

5) The Beans of Egypt, Maine by Carolyn Chute

Though it can be a difficult read - not complex, but emotionally tough - this New York Times bestseller is worth the discomfort to get through.

6) Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler

Every school kid in Maine has read this. It serves as both a warning of wandering away in Maine’s vast woods as well as a celebration of the hardiness of Maine youth.

7) Empire Falls by Richard Russo

Another Pulitzer Prize winner on the list, this book tells the story of Empire Grill owner Miles Roby and his life in a blue-collar Maine town.
