Whether you’re buying a gift for a teen or tween, are in that age group yourself, or are looking for a lighter read for your adult self, there are plenty of Maine-related options to read. From the spooky side of the state to sunny days on the ocean, these books take a look at the Pine Tree State through the adventures of younger protagonists.

1) Mystery in Longfellow Square, Mary C. Jane

Is poetry expert Mr. Tate as above board as he portrays himself, or is he after more than just poetry? Young Phil Holt investigates his suspicions as he takes care of the elderly Miss Goddard’s dog and hangs out with friends in the neighborhood around Portland’s Longfellow Square. My review of the book can be found here.

2) Fudge-A-Mania by Judy Blume

In the fourth installment in the Fudge series by Judy Blume, now 5-year-old Fudge and his family travel to Maine for a two-week summer vacation. They rent a house with their neighbors, and hijinks and hilarity ensue.

3) The Baby-Sitters’ Haunted House by Ann M. Martin

In the first Baby-Sitters Club Super Mystery, four of the baby-sitters head to coastal Maine to provide childcare for a family on vacation. While there, they stay in an old home that just might be haunted. Can the baby-sitters figure out what’s really going on?

4) The Vandemark Mummy by Cynthia Voigt

Written by Newbery Medal winner Cynthia Voigt, The Vandemark Mummy is a mystery set in Portland, Maine. The main characters are two children whose father is named the curator of a local Egyptian exhibit that begins to attract serious trouble - kidnapping and attempted murder. Naturally, the kids can’t help but get involved in solving the mystery surrounding the exhibit's seemingly cursed allure.

5) Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin

Described by Goodreads as a “classic coming of age story,” Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm tells the story of Rebecca, a poor girl whose father has died, as she grows into adulthood while living with her spinster aunts in Maine.
