Long a classic read for local schoolkids, Mystery In Longfellow Square is a good story and a compelling read for older elementary students or younger middle school students. Though it might be a bit old-fashioned for today’s kids - what, these kids are allowed to play outside by themselves? They don’t have cell phones and have to knock on their friends’ doors? - it will likely still get their attention. It has elements of classic mysteries including an old house, a mysterious stranger, an old lady, family drama, and curious youngsters. There’s also a dog along for the adventure!

An innocent mystery with a twisty plot, this book will perhaps be most appreciated by those who grew up in Portland and recognize the landmarks mentioned. That said, it’s a worthy read for any kid who wants a mystery that’s not too scary, but has enough plot elements to keep them guessing.

TL;DR: A good read for kids, or for adults from southern Maine who want a little bit of classic YA mystery alongside hometown nostalgia. It would also be a good read-aloud for parents.

Maine Thoughts: If you grew up in Portland, you’ll recognize the setting well - though the area around Longfellow Square has a bit of a different vibe in the 21st Century.
