The Blue Hill Fair

Are you a fan of the classic children’s novel Charlotte’s Web? If so, a trip to coastal Maine to check out the Blue Hill Fair might be in order. Blue Hill is about an hour from Bangor and 2.5 hours from Portland.

Each summer since 1891 the Blue Hill Fair has brought together agricultural events, fair food, and games in this small Maine town. E.B. White lived in the nearby Hancock County town of Brooklin and was partially inspired to write Charlotte’s Web by the Blue Hill Fair. Now, the fair includes a permanent exhibit dedicated to Charlotte’s Web. The replica barnyard even includes the famous “Some Pig” woven into a spiderweb.

When you visit the fair, be sure to drive around the region a bit. You’ll get a feel for why White so loved the area and was so inspired to write by it.
