Italian Restaurant in Madison

Elena Guarente was having a hard time financially after Robert’s death. The Italian restaurant she had opened near her home in Madison, Maine had closed and she was living on social security disability assistance.

‘Bobby, I’m in need of money,” she began. “I know my husband gave you those stolen paintings. You need to come to Maine to talk to Earle Berghman…”

Berghman and Gentile met in a food court at a Portland mall. It was April 2010.

Instead, he told Berghman that if Elene needed money, why didn’t she call the Boston lawyer who had provided her late husband with a $30,000 loan in the late 1980s that he used to buy his first house in central Maine.
